Quotes and Paraphrases

Extracted passages and paraphrases are held in the project’s literature workspace rather than published here, because the collection is a working artefact that mixes verbatim source text with drafting notes.

Conventions used in the working file

• Verbatim text is marked as a quotation with page or section locator and is never edited, including where the source contains errors.
• Paraphrases are recorded separately from quotations and carry the same locator, so that the distinction survives into drafting.
• Interpretive commentary is kept in a third register, so that a reader of the file can always tell what the source said from what the author concluded.

The purpose of the separation is narrow and practical: once a passage has been through a draft cycle, it becomes difficult to reconstruct whether a sentence was the source’s or the author’s. Keeping the registers apart at capture time is the only reliable point at which that distinction is cheap to maintain.
